Glaze Process

All functional items are hand crafted and fired in gas kilns at the Ann Arbor Potters Guild. Raku pieces are fired at my home in Grass Lake, MI.  Not only do I make each piece by hand, but as a member of the guild, I also help make the clay and glazes, load and fire kilns, and contribute to the other jobs that keep the guild running.

Because my glazes are a hand mixed combination of raw materials and water, and the firing occurs in a high fire gas reduction kiln, there will be variations in each piece. The color of the glazed, but unfired piece reflects the color of the glaze materials, not the color the glaze will be once fired. Here are a few pictures of mugs and ornaments during and after glazing, but before the final glaze firing.
